Near Point Hike

Today was a beautiful day for a hike in the mountains outside of Anchorage.  I went with the Walkabouts Hiking group. There were 6 ladies and 4 dogs along for the trek.  Pam, Sue Ellen, Karen, Kathy, and Madeline plus me.  Dogs were Baby, Biscuit, Dahla, and Stormy. The snow was mostly gone except for a couple of short patches right near the summit.  The first half along the Wolverine Trail was mostly fairly flat with lovely creeks passing near and crossing the trail. There were occasional muddy spots but we could mostly just avoid them by stepping on rocks. I never got wet feet, but a couple of dogs were pretty muddy. My dog, Baby doesn't like wet feet so she did a pretty good job of leaping over them. The second half was much steeper, but not extremely challenging.  It was a good workout however.  Round trip took us about 5 1/2 hours.  But we did linger awhile on top to enjoy the view and get a bite to eat. From the top and most of the top half of the hike, we had spectacular views of Anchorage and the inlet.  We could also see Denali and the Alaska Range in the distance.  It would be hard to find a day with better weather. It was a little windy on top but not enough to keep us from relaxing in the sunshine.
