Today was a perfect day for the 11 mile round trip trek to Wolverine Peak with the Valley Wanderers. It was sunny and warm, but not so warm that we were roasting. The trail was in great condition, with lots of wildflowers. We started fairly early so didn't see a lot of other hikers. We saw a huge bull moose out grazing in the meadow below us on our hike out. The approach is fairly long and not terribly steep, but the last couple miles definitely lets you know that you are climbing a mountain. Wolverine has the usual array of false summits. I kept thinking that I was seeing the summit, but when I would get closer, another peak always came into view. When we finally reached the top, the views were fantastic. We could see the city of Anchorage below, and since the weather was so good, we could also see Denali and the Alaska Range in the distance. We spent some time just relaxing and enjoying the sunshine on the summit. We could have gone down the same way we had come up, but some of the group had continued along the summit ridge and then traversed down into the valley in the past. We decided to take that alternate route today, for variety. It was really nice, with gigantic rock formations, that were easily crossed. we descended down through the tundra to our original trail which involved a bit of fairly easy side hill hiking. Lots of wildflowers along the way. The trail was mostly snow and mud free. It is finally starting to feel like summer here in Alaska.
