They have stopped sending me their weekly emails, so for the last month I have not done a hike with them. I also hike with the Alaska Walkabouts, the hiking group from Anchorage. My friend Pam is also a member of that group. Today they had planned to ski on the frozen surface of Eklutna Lake. I heard the conditions were perfect there right now, so carpooled with Pam to the lake. We stopped at the bottom of Eklutna Lake Road and picked up my friend Alice. Alice has ski boots but no skis or poles. So I used my skate skis and downhill ski poles and loaned her my classic cross country skis and my adjustable ski poles. She has only skied a couple of times, so skiing on a flat frozen lake is the perfect place to learn how to handle skis. There were 17 of us on this trip. I had passed on the report of the great conditions after my friend, Diane told me of her trip there the day before. That brought the whole gang out for a glorious trip along the lake. Pam brought her dog, Dahla, and Madeline brought her bigger dog, Biscuit. I kept Bella on her leash at first because she seemed intent on letting Biscuit know who's boss. I wasn't worried about Biscuit hurting Bella but about Bella biting Biscuit with one or two of her few remaining teeth. Bella finally mellowed out and since we were way out in the middle of a huge lake, I let her run loose. She was great. She would run to the folks in front, then back to the last skier, likely running twice the distance of the rest of us. Frequently reminding Biscuit that she was the lead 10 pound Yorkshire Terrier. Biscuit just wandered away rolling his eyes! Bella always comes running back when I call her. We went to a cabin on the far side of the lake and had a few of Madeline's delicious coconut brownies. It wasn't the beautiful sunny day we had yesterday, and was even snowing a bit in the beginning, but still fairly warm and quite calm. I kept Bella off her leash until we started getting close to the trailhead on our return, where we started seeing other people and a few dogs. I hooked her up again and suddenly found myself moving a lot faster as she raced her way back towards the parking lot. She certainly has a lot of energy. We did a total of 8 miles but I'm sure she did more than 10. She has a bit of arthritis and has been favoring her left rear leg. But it sure wasn't slowing her down today. I'm sure she will sleep well tonight. <br />It was really fun skiing with this group. I suspect I'll go back to doing a lot more with them on my Saturdays from now on, since the other group seems to have dropped me from their list. Here in Alaska, especially, it is safer to hike with others since there are bears and moose that can be very dangerous. I do often hike alone on the weekdays though.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5tMs0P8L-yXwXp8WSjEpKZCFr4vRPlGprGupty5x-oK_eoupPFXrSIGoj016kj4YO8dABMd0uRyUyKJpF8c5roF5Ghz2JoirIemVXadBVWhsvj2mUfOnEwfWIVTdaRk2YZaZWc1nix66tAgfbksz3gMKMz97Axy_sjzMLeG6niW-ZWRLuAfanZ5AafkZp/s2048/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5tMs0P8L-yXwXp8WSjEpKZCFr4vRPlGprGupty5x-oK_eoupPFXrSIGoj016kj4YO8dABMd0uRyUyKJpF8c5roF5Ghz2JoirIemVXadBVWhsvj2mUfOnEwfWIVTdaRk2YZaZWc1nix66tAgfbksz3gMKMz97Axy_sjzMLeG6niW-ZWRLuAfanZ5AafkZp/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQvf48s_Zd2NUi6Rd88LQxtDDD-Rp30Hmsc7gMlUphzCFpJ3Il-Nd6qUJQGoGn8AL9yW-o46e3AzHWN-QRWP_ZHNj6Md5enSy3Vmnv0zc16PGQOQ1utVBqjkVLbabHUyCxTVh8L9lF48uIxYRYDRnp6BIFLox5TDZyYWKc1acPeahabFMLRSzC_CPMfLOD/s2048/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQvf48s_Zd2NUi6Rd88LQxtDDD-Rp30Hmsc7gMlUphzCFpJ3Il-Nd6qUJQGoGn8AL9yW-o46e3AzHWN-QRWP_ZHNj6Md5enSy3Vmnv0zc16PGQOQ1utVBqjkVLbabHUyCxTVh8L9lF48uIxYRYDRnp6BIFLox5TDZyYWKc1acPeahabFMLRSzC_CPMfLOD/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXJ6yWGM6G3MIyFIdXpTxtN7l_u8p-BLjoRTkl8UkA7C8q3AQG6YQAf5of7wPlRx8ehiZjCvQIC6S51gToV6Y2MJLxYtJ2J25pqvtd2bBUN8Mh8Gk5LlDlrWEs_ZAra4Yp_EStqswx94redqh8jJbZnDxtNb_aQdWsnsGRXU_QvtzduBt0-f7aZ0PJ5U5v/s2048/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXJ6yWGM6G3MIyFIdXpTxtN7l_u8p-BLjoRTkl8UkA7C8q3AQG6YQAf5of7wPlRx8ehiZjCvQIC6S51gToV6Y2MJLxYtJ2J25pqvtd2bBUN8Mh8Gk5LlDlrWEs_ZAra4Yp_EStqswx94redqh8jJbZnDxtNb_aQdWsnsGRXU_QvtzduBt0-f7aZ0PJ5U5v/s320/3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHU35aSTOPrdN9WPLI0A6ZeQ06uaMXc6lnDC70K3UUXE9Roq1UYUNnIqyTA729a_rc5dhgEzJ7gxyhkwI6MaoJsxtINK5u2QtFosKf-8KkM1qGtEzHP5lRwcOJQdRvdliZUVYMuu3RB6cDo-Ac6Nd4b1iW8hZ4_myO4FzE3uB1XA7fotXOttRDhHYWLHzT/s2048/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHU35aSTOPrdN9WPLI0A6ZeQ06uaMXc6lnDC70K3UUXE9Roq1UYUNnIqyTA729a_rc5dhgEzJ7gxyhkwI6MaoJsxtINK5u2QtFosKf-8KkM1qGtEzHP5lRwcOJQdRvdliZUVYMuu3RB6cDo-Ac6Nd4b1iW8hZ4_myO4FzE3uB1XA7fotXOttRDhHYWLHzT/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bella at the cabin</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpOUbQ5NPqg8raQsWquX5c1EMd9yG1k8P8AZphu1NcqA4iy1NNlj0JDcNhOur_mJpCmZkXbaabW7ThAoCBE0sVr7L1BnU5MHNIKmI-3J-M7hrs4iD08rhTeZXZZnA1r5cRPWFJ_mgMN_CoSw9DpRiZVMdekCRrCX3kVdFf33WbBAB-Me66BWKGsVaEXvf4/s2048/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1602" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpOUbQ5NPqg8raQsWquX5c1EMd9yG1k8P8AZphu1NcqA4iy1NNlj0JDcNhOur_mJpCmZkXbaabW7ThAoCBE0sVr7L1BnU5MHNIKmI-3J-M7hrs4iD08rhTeZXZZnA1r5cRPWFJ_mgMN_CoSw9DpRiZVMdekCRrCX3kVdFf33WbBAB-Me66BWKGsVaEXvf4/s320/5.jpg" width="250" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Me and Bella with her snow beard</td></tr></tbody></table>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-28695832405191940802024-03-15T20:10:00.064-08:002024-03-17T08:36:10.983-08:00Archangel Road Ski<p>I downhill skied up at Skeetawk all day yesterday. But Fridays are usually the days I spend hiking or skiing with my friend Pam. Today we skied the groomed trail along Archangel Road in the Hatcher Pass area. Of course we had our two dogs, Bella and Dahla. They get along with each other so well. I generally keep Bella on her leash, but especially on this route because signs remind us that there is trapping along this road. Dogs tend to run off the main trail, which could result in a tragedy for our dogs. Pam doesn't like keeping Dahla on leash, which is generally OK because Dahla tends to stay right by her side. Gahla is an 18 pound Lhasa Apso. Bella is much smaller and loves to run after people and other dogs. I never want her near loose dogs that are often seen along this road. The ski conditions were perfect and it was a gorgeous sunny warm day. We skied to the bridge, which is where we meet the area that allows snow machine traffic. It's our usual turning around point. I felt like I barely got a workout because Bella likes to run, and pulls so hard that I could almost have made the trip by simply standing still. But of course, I do push hard enough that she doesn't end up doing all the work. On our way back as we were flying down a steep section inside the groomed ski tracks, I noticed Dahla was on longer in sight. We stopped and Pam called and called out to her and we still didn't see her. We turned back with both of us calling. I suddenly thought I saw movement a few hundred feet to my left in the deep snow. It was Dahla. She was intent on investigating or chasing something way out there. It took awhile to finally get her attention and she eventually started moving, but not exactly towards us. There was a deep slope between her location and ours and we weren't sure how well we could negotiate that on our skinny skis. She eventually made her way back to us, but it was quite a scare. Pam put her on her leash as we continued on back to the trailhead. Dahla tends to walk beside Pam, but Bella acts more like an Iditarod lead dog headed to Nome, by pulling me at breakneck speed, especially on the steep downhills. I had a couple of interesting encounters as we passed other skiers with dogs heading up the trail. Bella forgets that her destination is straight ahead and suddenly veers in the direction of the other dogs. This causes me to do some serious yelling and grabbing onto her leash as I try to keep from getting pulled off my feet into a pile of broken bones. She is gradually starting to understand the command "On By"!<br />All in all, it was a beautiful 4 mile ski trip.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW_oF7p4qjr7wmRJRFxw0gk8Nw4Gg915TiVynbq7sGDqkh34VShXuvYA_zYU-n64fbRFT3hGbnC0QtU7Phi1KlX7tknhuUMwRbv0rabDAu1HpNHWIBbC3C5V_NmyCWYn3xHgj8QJBarDoLnKaLE5yRtEVCP_qitbESsx2fHnWkAzDHEkrz7swuViycIiBf/s2048/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiW_oF7p4qjr7wmRJRFxw0gk8Nw4Gg915TiVynbq7sGDqkh34VShXuvYA_zYU-n64fbRFT3hGbnC0QtU7Phi1KlX7tknhuUMwRbv0rabDAu1HpNHWIBbC3C5V_NmyCWYn3xHgj8QJBarDoLnKaLE5yRtEVCP_qitbESsx2fHnWkAzDHEkrz7swuViycIiBf/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Archangel Creek Bridge</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNmkZ0VpsOmPZnkey5clUDgFDCp57jSpMhoVhyphenhyphenmOxrSewMK9Xjx3dql0g8sUxGEbBWG-VzoI2mSIsaYCwZim5JhG9t8TMFpuB7hG1UF-yU6P5vThx47bGEx9R5EegOsb9n1NBDQBqJ8DTlV7cOo-OsMQzaZRZjbxQnUl3Mf9M6Zsf7NauhEF87VeU27Az1/s2048/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNmkZ0VpsOmPZnkey5clUDgFDCp57jSpMhoVhyphenhyphenmOxrSewMK9Xjx3dql0g8sUxGEbBWG-VzoI2mSIsaYCwZim5JhG9t8TMFpuB7hG1UF-yU6P5vThx47bGEx9R5EegOsb9n1NBDQBqJ8DTlV7cOo-OsMQzaZRZjbxQnUl3Mf9M6Zsf7NauhEF87VeU27Az1/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5c7czGAd18XNubBnDKBhxYcM6LKcfkhGbM3X-1oxdgFdocKpwCR93L94_DMqjFI3Zr3bDOUxznN9uojTQ-5AeyNjJREANFG0b0wgvnc-qkFYuMc5h3jwO410nAkLs8ubl0uWaB8pRNVt5ZPcaqbKn-OAatgE5ufQDa51csKLc2mHpLV9I3AfA7qRTK_gr/s2048/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5c7czGAd18XNubBnDKBhxYcM6LKcfkhGbM3X-1oxdgFdocKpwCR93L94_DMqjFI3Zr3bDOUxznN9uojTQ-5AeyNjJREANFG0b0wgvnc-qkFYuMc5h3jwO410nAkLs8ubl0uWaB8pRNVt5ZPcaqbKn-OAatgE5ufQDa51csKLc2mHpLV9I3AfA7qRTK_gr/s320/3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-77451394261730757012024-03-09T22:49:00.023-09:002024-03-11T10:57:46.914-08:00Gold Mint Trail<p>It's a beautiful day for a walk in the mountains. Bella is still supposed to take it easy as her mouth continues to heal after so many tooth extractions. But she insists on getting out of the house. So we did a fairly slow flat walk in the snow up on the Gold Mint Trail, 4 miles round trip. It is such a spectacular place any time of year. But I think I love winter best. Everything is so pristine and clean looking covered in snow. It wasn't very cold so I was almost too warm some of the time. We only encountered a couple of other hikers. One couple had a big dog in a sled that they were pulling. Bella went crazy barking and I had to pick her up. She thinks it's necessary to bark her head off anytime she sees another dog. Dogs can be so silly! I love this trail and I plan to hike to the end of it and camp in or near the mountain hut on the glacier at 9 miles in. I can never find anyone willing to do that backpack trip with me so have decided to simply do it by myself. I'm sure in summer I won't be the only one on the trail. Bella will be a good hiking companion even if she gets tired and needs to be carried. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZIIYzrQF7k4gaaTM89ZHgWRbno58tIzhjp4QEYWzrovPWt4LfcI5jR7BU7-oOJ17xncs9Mc25seQM-1_FHN9Snbx12lvLgtSzt_kZO993xxRBPzxOiR2Q4xA5VB86UA-HrtFnbrQDi2Gl4SE6_jBy35DImhVTTrhFi9xcOA5DHlOIu-ZdWN4LbDTP8Ksv/s2048/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZIIYzrQF7k4gaaTM89ZHgWRbno58tIzhjp4QEYWzrovPWt4LfcI5jR7BU7-oOJ17xncs9Mc25seQM-1_FHN9Snbx12lvLgtSzt_kZO993xxRBPzxOiR2Q4xA5VB86UA-HrtFnbrQDi2Gl4SE6_jBy35DImhVTTrhFi9xcOA5DHlOIu-ZdWN4LbDTP8Ksv/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbbQ6-l4GdnGuhz_HGPKalaGLeSeLmwcDt_0gkkBQ44kOocKq7oKgfxiziv73A5tv1m8zfTc9cLuovJmRtId-5q_LU1xxAspai8XSnYlLpujtAG3k-mSHkNaM4pbihhzwrosOsDzrSVAFTT0XeSHAWXsT5uMcyKIvrHpOgu-oCFVy6rh0tqoaYIsUNaqxu/s2048/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1512" data-original-width="2048" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbbQ6-l4GdnGuhz_HGPKalaGLeSeLmwcDt_0gkkBQ44kOocKq7oKgfxiziv73A5tv1m8zfTc9cLuovJmRtId-5q_LU1xxAspai8XSnYlLpujtAG3k-mSHkNaM4pbihhzwrosOsDzrSVAFTT0XeSHAWXsT5uMcyKIvrHpOgu-oCFVy6rh0tqoaYIsUNaqxu/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigAWmEPWl747kSIPStqUpZayuPWWVtdeofLCgwxUoxqKsIUClzHDj4Gg4znWm-6WmZ3lpBgmQWbzurFsWmSYMknNA7toGctht0m3p46lJGtQIBGpB06V7eFSj0TBM3uCj7C-2cbq7_P3GdsYNJ5XhGVEfUyF_NXMmkeobwq270GJjGWSJvjIe0bbi9MzvI/s2048/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigAWmEPWl747kSIPStqUpZayuPWWVtdeofLCgwxUoxqKsIUClzHDj4Gg4znWm-6WmZ3lpBgmQWbzurFsWmSYMknNA7toGctht0m3p46lJGtQIBGpB06V7eFSj0TBM3uCj7C-2cbq7_P3GdsYNJ5XhGVEfUyF_NXMmkeobwq270GJjGWSJvjIe0bbi9MzvI/s320/3.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI6L3gfT4h3tCIejAzZ3jwI0BhXqYyPyYazE0JgE8aP5qYfGaCFsM8e9raDRKZ0XKoNvmxED9vhvLpb5J8QHACIIpHdskEykbCtx2BRc8BHs3NRpIAIN22eEcF0k1ecCd_zECXHhCtMBVF5RojE-pUxsNAaal8PahJn3MSjw7S6H8AYpFNrtNiXibUmXq0/s2048/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI6L3gfT4h3tCIejAzZ3jwI0BhXqYyPyYazE0JgE8aP5qYfGaCFsM8e9raDRKZ0XKoNvmxED9vhvLpb5J8QHACIIpHdskEykbCtx2BRc8BHs3NRpIAIN22eEcF0k1ecCd_zECXHhCtMBVF5RojE-pUxsNAaal8PahJn3MSjw7S6H8AYpFNrtNiXibUmXq0/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0TV4FBamA-4LROinTyFDY6XoY68Yit0HXx-DD4Z2DZl8hiMfqQB5w3sBB9szG89hPb3kMOQJRMrcifejKPD79K48ZAMNwMH1JhHc7p_UXsPjjZ1Msn56VH_IOyx1FZqbS5VVanca8a0JSfyH3OeTRz3seIsq75V0XyjP131dSkDRP81kEq2_HHIQZn5pf/s2048/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0TV4FBamA-4LROinTyFDY6XoY68Yit0HXx-DD4Z2DZl8hiMfqQB5w3sBB9szG89hPb3kMOQJRMrcifejKPD79K48ZAMNwMH1JhHc7p_UXsPjjZ1Msn56VH_IOyx1FZqbS5VVanca8a0JSfyH3OeTRz3seIsq75V0XyjP131dSkDRP81kEq2_HHIQZn5pf/s320/5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-55570425717362158262024-03-05T18:47:00.039-09:002024-03-07T14:01:20.739-09:00Eklutna Lakeside Trail<p> I've had to keep Bella fairly calm since February 29, last week when she had her teeth cleaned. Her teeth were in extraordinarily bad shape resulting in having to have 13 pulled. Because she has so many stitches, the vet doesn't want her doing extremely strenuous hikes for a couple of weeks. She has been very restless, missing our hikes. So I have taken her on our regular morning and evening doggie walks around the neighborhood, plus started taking her on the one mile walk around Reflections Lake. Today I drove up to Eklutna Lake mainly to see the conditions there. We started out on a short walk but ended up walking 3.5 miles and paying a visit to the little butterfly memorial I had made along the trail for Baby, my chihuahua who was killed there last May. Bella did great and was full of energy. She didn't seem to be in any kind of discomfort so we will likely start gradually getting back to our old routine. I'm still keeping her on soft food. She does still have 7 teeth, 3 canines and 4 tiny front teeth. She doesn't have any trouble eating and she is not suffering from loss of appetite. She keeps begging for her usual treats, but I'm holding off on those since most are very hard. I still give her the soft training treats.</p><p>The trail was nice today. I don't think it was too conducive to skiing, mainly because there were sticks and debris scattered all over it from the recent wind storms. I did see one skier out on the lake, so maybe it was good skiing out there. But I didn't bring my skis today. We just walked. It wasn't a very pretty or photogenic day due to the low overcast, but it's always pleasant hiking up there.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZCxmupbsNRIQvMo1NoRNEd5yN5TVYG7MqMk-QpSeFDZdA8xfoNw-OA-cbipgX9bc5h-sf1qWPQj9TLG8ZiYO8v_r50SJciCdPMx1p6K13pxfKbc3gXYH4ygGd-FulRrwdIDZXkmkIQv4Bw8_TPe7fWLZIH81xywyHEEpZFad7MlrqiHrSLnPzkHGdpsfH/s2048/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZCxmupbsNRIQvMo1NoRNEd5yN5TVYG7MqMk-QpSeFDZdA8xfoNw-OA-cbipgX9bc5h-sf1qWPQj9TLG8ZiYO8v_r50SJciCdPMx1p6K13pxfKbc3gXYH4ygGd-FulRrwdIDZXkmkIQv4Bw8_TPe7fWLZIH81xywyHEEpZFad7MlrqiHrSLnPzkHGdpsfH/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIkPpUYBPymEV5PD4ZVUjP5C-rU09zT4XzYftXe-figpVW5yX04lZEUt-h9GvWfhwxlbSmB4WoDZahR8swQzL01Egcfmsy3X_gvOAZeg7lkocnxMqo9QPzAFrbDAJy0WwXb6ffTt0Sc3VUbtjJva3hexjvZeQoJTN2W5wSxMPsioOrRZi-cRcov5swo9ch/s2048/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIkPpUYBPymEV5PD4ZVUjP5C-rU09zT4XzYftXe-figpVW5yX04lZEUt-h9GvWfhwxlbSmB4WoDZahR8swQzL01Egcfmsy3X_gvOAZeg7lkocnxMqo9QPzAFrbDAJy0WwXb6ffTt0Sc3VUbtjJva3hexjvZeQoJTN2W5wSxMPsioOrRZi-cRcov5swo9ch/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-7297979640799833262024-02-23T17:00:00.032-09:002024-02-28T17:20:44.833-09:00Moose Range Ski<p> Today Bella and I cross country skied out on the Moose Range trails with Pam and her dog Dahla. The conditions were amazing. The trails had been groomed and the snow was beautiful fresh powder. It was also calm and fairly sunny. We stayed on the main trail to the swamp area and from there we took off along the swamp edge on the fresh snow. It was mostly now just a snowmachine trail but once again we intersected another groomed trail. It was heavenly skiing. The trail turned into the woods once we got to the end of the swamp area. It was now much narrower and had some fairly steep hills. With the dog pulling me, I get uncomfortable if the terrain gets very steep when I'm on my skinny cross country skis. I finally crashed into a pile of snow and had quite a hard time getting myself back up. I had hurt my right foot recently and it was seriously complaining as I tried to get myself back to standing. Once I was upright again we decided to turn back and follow our original trail back to the cars. It was a beautiful little 4 mile trip.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLPsIHILjwWbJAA76PH8aQ_LTAbUzB6ODUPn3CONezlvKhL77F6-oN5rnNTj38gYh1CumEetpI_uIsiNDmkg8-L5tu3QxX4bV2XxGzvwcBCjFmDkzAMyIQMoqPoVq7IjTjBUp-FhodxNRhBQNaTNiSr6BhuNHEJCik-neq2XU4zEcCxesoHdIjiKvoYpgP/s2048/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1920" data-original-width="2048" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLPsIHILjwWbJAA76PH8aQ_LTAbUzB6ODUPn3CONezlvKhL77F6-oN5rnNTj38gYh1CumEetpI_uIsiNDmkg8-L5tu3QxX4bV2XxGzvwcBCjFmDkzAMyIQMoqPoVq7IjTjBUp-FhodxNRhBQNaTNiSr6BhuNHEJCik-neq2XU4zEcCxesoHdIjiKvoYpgP/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Snowball Bella</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWZPoYB9C5_tnPFBuYQqUQ1tIq9c8qaiIUU6tDsEq56vU91I-dAOA5dHNz2g8llMiVPcLbyo3ZPGkmX8YIA5GrGwp7qjYGrdlQVChUkLZhceB2VoegH2QJCtRY2Gnw8rVkA5mP_Fdcpm7eM68vrg-WsU3hU32_PU7d6lL9nR1ELQLyhozC02C9ZjTTxLGG/s2048/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWZPoYB9C5_tnPFBuYQqUQ1tIq9c8qaiIUU6tDsEq56vU91I-dAOA5dHNz2g8llMiVPcLbyo3ZPGkmX8YIA5GrGwp7qjYGrdlQVChUkLZhceB2VoegH2QJCtRY2Gnw8rVkA5mP_Fdcpm7eM68vrg-WsU3hU32_PU7d6lL9nR1ELQLyhozC02C9ZjTTxLGG/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kings Mountain</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4-roM1UR8ktOSDHBD25swDITuVzGAoCP_Zo4bjpb2_-85IR6XJq4dl7lF8f8g_0RNJanECuaWV2IH5kKG3HShvoasH4AivtCL_IbZnX40QHoAOPXuJNyJEwIrjgWk6Hhl1ug7cNe7YkUf8CBUsUX0GH8M3PDS2uJ14ZZvCL_hN9QNZUKlzBerd2NyxYN_/s2048/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4-roM1UR8ktOSDHBD25swDITuVzGAoCP_Zo4bjpb2_-85IR6XJq4dl7lF8f8g_0RNJanECuaWV2IH5kKG3HShvoasH4AivtCL_IbZnX40QHoAOPXuJNyJEwIrjgWk6Hhl1ug7cNe7YkUf8CBUsUX0GH8M3PDS2uJ14ZZvCL_hN9QNZUKlzBerd2NyxYN_/s320/3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9YFp83x_BM561YVcqBmK14hyphenhyphenZ7r9B4S9FKjruuOKRckdnDjEbx86IoHN17gVOf3Csq8XU0uaq00V_Wzu9bfk048rwfNOQI7tH9qZH12tpY27Ep4hYiXfY7RpT7r_0WbAzFtJMkOS2MJiy0AOEi3WysK5UGauGk7vPT31f2M7WqtwovLhRb4EGw5J-f-GK/s2048/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9YFp83x_BM561YVcqBmK14hyphenhyphenZ7r9B4S9FKjruuOKRckdnDjEbx86IoHN17gVOf3Csq8XU0uaq00V_Wzu9bfk048rwfNOQI7tH9qZH12tpY27Ep4hYiXfY7RpT7r_0WbAzFtJMkOS2MJiy0AOEi3WysK5UGauGk7vPT31f2M7WqtwovLhRb4EGw5J-f-GK/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Arkose Ridge</td></tr></tbody></table>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-54491202753413190202024-02-21T16:40:00.042-09:002024-02-28T16:58:18.341-09:00Butte Hike<p>Very icy hike up Bodenburg Butte today. It was so icy I almost turned around as soon as I reached the gate to the trailhead. I was wearing my micro spikes on my shoes and they seemed to be keeping me from slipping, so I decided to continue on. The trail had been hard packed snow but it had since melted due to a week of warm temperatures. But now it was cold again and it had turned to nearly glare ice. Bella and I continued on. I figured I would make my go or no go decision once we reached the long series of wooden steps that climb the steepest part of the trail. Without spikes, they would have been impossible, but by gripping the ropes and handrails I was able to climb the stairs safely. There were a couple of places where I had to lift the dog up because she couldn't climb on the clear ice. But the rest of the way up was pretty good. Right at the top, I found the snow was rough and potholed, although still ice. It was kind of tricky footing, but we made it up into the rocks on the summit. It had been calm at the start but on top the wind was extreme and we quickly found shelter behind a big rock outcropping. We didn't stay long, took my photos and we quickly started our descent. Bella thought it would be nice to run down the whole way. I spent most of the way down the stairs shouting, slow down slow down, because I didn't dare take her off the leash on that trail. It is heavily used by people hiking with dogs. We only encountered two women about halfway down the stairs. Bella tried to run to them, and I had to do some tricky maneuvering to get past them still standing. Once we were past the stairs, we were both able to run all the way down. Near the bottom we did run into a woman with a dog, but I picked up Bella and we passed them quickly. She does like to start something with every dog we meet. All in all, it was a fun little hike and a nice run down. Thank goodness for micro spikes. </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_EsWN1POE7HdCaSXYdcfAWmVFaKyDQ5lK4Ov2HlTAV8bHyhR71x5JF6N1aj9TbTykPWUxTrV-0CGJHaLcjrheP4WRRZMnWGUxhK6Nw5RgcfWSAeWYTduepMJH1N_bgo-t76LdnVoYZVCT10eY4c4REEnQ-UwGY6JlY-MqO61upR6V1BnU6DrTsXwaNTcR/s2048/2%2021%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_EsWN1POE7HdCaSXYdcfAWmVFaKyDQ5lK4Ov2HlTAV8bHyhR71x5JF6N1aj9TbTykPWUxTrV-0CGJHaLcjrheP4WRRZMnWGUxhK6Nw5RgcfWSAeWYTduepMJH1N_bgo-t76LdnVoYZVCT10eY4c4REEnQ-UwGY6JlY-MqO61upR6V1BnU6DrTsXwaNTcR/s320/2%2021%201.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pioneer Peak from the summit</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicK0qxAyH2p_ABJyAGvVM2hJg7lj8CZV7JEr8yBUZ3yoxlXvTsrzgme2BMIGwJaqVg2n0niUII8aLUo_y9EqjXKML6PxLNk5tKHMDW_QiP9MxpSRktddSeWOsVb0QB2IPS47LyxDPO-d2w1UWjqSJ8kLlx8Gcu-m3bH_W4x7ZULSS4KAdEI9buYygY-rXk/s2048/2%2021%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicK0qxAyH2p_ABJyAGvVM2hJg7lj8CZV7JEr8yBUZ3yoxlXvTsrzgme2BMIGwJaqVg2n0niUII8aLUo_y9EqjXKML6PxLNk5tKHMDW_QiP9MxpSRktddSeWOsVb0QB2IPS47LyxDPO-d2w1UWjqSJ8kLlx8Gcu-m3bH_W4x7ZULSS4KAdEI9buYygY-rXk/s320/2%2021%202.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Twin Peaks from the summit</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF6wV642tYfbF3S23TnOeoKSm_AA5AAyVwsXAKKKgv1I2GqAHhl8jCIlhr4KB8hrtF5UQSIpUfB-yvbkn_SITTRyBP911QsCQw9WH2RKgytvJ2CzyAR2HHo2s8hkZ7s9QNgZF_VX2lGDNrtYXCBrwrutsT8dh0kjoihQTeji9H8i0kbcCB1ndi8nNpErMO/s2048/2%2021%203.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF6wV642tYfbF3S23TnOeoKSm_AA5AAyVwsXAKKKgv1I2GqAHhl8jCIlhr4KB8hrtF5UQSIpUfB-yvbkn_SITTRyBP911QsCQw9WH2RKgytvJ2CzyAR2HHo2s8hkZ7s9QNgZF_VX2lGDNrtYXCBrwrutsT8dh0kjoihQTeji9H8i0kbcCB1ndi8nNpErMO/s320/2%2021%203.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Knik Glacier from the summit</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiODHBtBeik4EmhwE2Kqw2zcEyIB0cgFpZrz-tH-wmYvwCnhCP9cp9NxRrlNQaNgzIwXMqug0DUyb-DtO8fr4w8maufJ5idtR1TJkJ4INVgWMmhBDlNy4kJ_eUgHOktPSkSewj7EOCtAQtFOKr5bumZpMpfoooMFHZrNX940AB1foE03vT2jdS7prTfCCfD/s2048/2%2021%204.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiODHBtBeik4EmhwE2Kqw2zcEyIB0cgFpZrz-tH-wmYvwCnhCP9cp9NxRrlNQaNgzIwXMqug0DUyb-DtO8fr4w8maufJ5idtR1TJkJ4INVgWMmhBDlNy4kJ_eUgHOktPSkSewj7EOCtAQtFOKr5bumZpMpfoooMFHZrNX940AB1foE03vT2jdS7prTfCCfD/s320/2%2021%204.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Mountains to the north from the summit</td></tr></tbody></table>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-53908557399486145162024-02-17T18:50:00.001-09:002024-02-17T18:50:36.874-09:00Ptarmigan Valley Trail<p> This was a hike with the Valley Wanderers. I invited Pam to go with us because she wanted to do something fairly local so she could get home to get ready to go to dinner in Anchorage later. She was tired from our Lazy Mountain hike the day before so decided pretty quickly that the speedy Valley Wanderers were too speedy for her today. I felt like I was keeping up at first, but I almost always end up being left behind, so I was quite happy to go at Pam's pace instead of pushing myself to total exhaustion. I admit, I was a bit tired from Lazy Mountain also. Our two little dogs got along great and seemed to be having a wonderful time. They certainly didn't seem tired from Lazy Mountain yesterday. Although, Bella has been sound asleep ever since we got back home. Our goal was the bridge over the Little Peters Creek. We ran into the returning Valley Wanderers group about 1/4 mile from the bridge, so they really weren't very far ahead of us. It was overcast so not quite the beautiful clear blue sky weather of yesterday, but it was a nice temperature and the snow was perfect for hiking. There were a few snow machines on the trail so I kept Bella on her leash the whole time. She does delight in chasing things like that. She handled them and the few dogs we met, pretty well. But I was glad she was on her leash. On the way up we had beautiful views of Denali (Mt McKinley) beneath the clouds. But on the return trip the clouds had lowered and obscured the beautiful view. It was my first time to hike more than a short distance on this trail. I'm looking forward to trying it again in summer and exploring beyond the bridge. Today's hike was 7 miles round trip with a 1600 foot elevation gain over rolling hills.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; She did great, especially since she had surgery just a couple days over 2 weeks ago and had her stitches out 4 days ago. It was an absolutely perfect day to climb Lazy. It was sunny but not warm enough to turn the hard packed snow trail to nasty mush. It stayed fairly firm the whole way up and back. Pam and her dog Dahla were also with us. The first half up the main trail, is very steep but there were good footsteps to follow so we could avoid the slick areas where people had been sliding down on the wet snow on warmer days. Bella slid down a couple of them, but I stayed off of them. I kept her on her leash all the way to the summit. The last ridge to the summit was kind of intimidating. It was the width of my foot with steep snow down each side. I kept Bella on a short leash and scurried over that as fast as I could. I really didn't want her to try exploring down either side and sending me careening down onto the steep slopes on either side. We found a nice rocky prominence on the summit and spent a few minutes sitting there admiring the view of Matanuska Peak. Bella was quite interested in exploring the rocky points, an activity I refused to allow. There was a man with a huge black dog on another rocky point near us. I made sure Bella didn't decide to start a bark fest with him! We were a little worried about how conditions may have changed for our trip down. Pam is not a fan of steep downhill and neither of us were interested in a slip sliding descent if the snow had softened. It was obvious that the less steep Lazy Moose Trail had not been packed since the last storm, so we knew the steep route was our only choice. Happily, once back to the picnic table at the halfway point, we found the snow was still firm and fairly easy going. Bella had been trying to race all the way down, so I gave up trying to keep up with her on her leash. Walking down on steep slippery snow is hard enough without someone trying to pull you down at breakneck speed. I let her off the leash most of the way down and was delighted that she obeyed me immediately when I called her to stop or come back. Once past the picnic table, Bella and I ran all the way down that last steep mile. It was invigorating and a wonderful workout. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitUgAd_AhZ8ShNOvMbSM_M5YUORSSwV7Ti4VjClIrXgaohzPsSYwy_iWUCRCR6nfsAGg51h-usXp1tb2AE7ZI0IvPxouin4zUjEdvCvKfb9nyYzbl56M20f9p4FU2a1331L0cli1BlSTUFkBBb6hBCUQnTaVLWhhpfuSV153xQ1bmV35dCwEIpbux4Ig40/s2048/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; He had created beautiful ski trails but for several days we have had extremely unseasonably warm weather, which had ruined his trails. Nothing out there was skiable, but could be traveled using snowshoes. Even with them it was pretty tough going. It was all quite rutted from his attempts to hike it the last two days, sinking in making big holes. Now it has cooled off again turning all the mess to icey crunchy post holes. But we were able to crunch our way through it all the way to the Matanuska River. There is an old Dike Road that in the past folks were able to drive. But it has been closed off for some time. Now the only official way to access that area is directly from his back yard or maybe from a couple of his other neighbors. It's quite wild out there. We passed and even crossed a few streams that had been frozen but were now open water. The Dike Road itself was nice going though. We hiked exactly 5 miles out and back. The temperature was just over freezing but the north wind came up as we started back. My dog stayed on her leash and did surprisingly well considering she had surgery just over two weeks ago. I was happy I never needed to carry her. This snow didn't tend to create giant snowballs on her legs like we encountered yesterday. It all went quite well. I enjoyed Frank's stories of how things had changed in the area in the 30 years he had lived there. We had some beautiful views of the local mountains and the frozen river.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4vK00oLC3tJ5duyekM59lDy69r5OPQZjEit6zmI2bryAPdGTduPpn-jPg_RJkOWwIJ66EyMCvHcYsb8ilxoZgx-Y5qch21BsYtzPqIKoyrZCOX3dnm5e03ewPkKC5vTsBdmDHtyJqjSP8qCZg5TCDM7CPeZSsqCac8zlBJwo9iT11dxSLvVlE4rjotGZF/s5712/IMG_6618.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; But I was not planning to try to climb up onto avalanche terrain. I decided to cross country ski on Archangel Road, a very popular groomed ski area that is on a road they close in winter. It's been quite warm for February in Alaska, 40 degrees already in the morning. About one mile in on the road I came across a very recent avalanche across the road, likely from yesterday. There were enough ski tracks across it that it obviously had not just happened. I had to kind of pick my way across the avalanche debris. I found it to be a little disconcerting, but I still continued on. I was wearing my avalanche beacon but since I was not traveling with a partner also wearing one, I figured it really wouldn't do much good if another slide came down and buried me and my dog. </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKqN6mXaDmLo2W0VABxdWVE5ZdLewXzBJSWJp2Y4LDOz9IhQ-K10REG1fVR-ABuhbG6UXj9PYovPswcP8XS9UU1QZZOYlYN16uH7kjgu1FeK1PYvMcYsJAwDWhcqdbX7KieVVuS0DhV8ovuyeheSTfPlxhnpTUlrb2ehSL_w4rsN4CHRPoi2MTh0RFcrEY/s2048/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1540" data-original-width="2048" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKqN6mXaDmLo2W0VABxdWVE5ZdLewXzBJSWJp2Y4LDOz9IhQ-K10REG1fVR-ABuhbG6UXj9PYovPswcP8XS9UU1QZZOYlYN16uH7kjgu1FeK1PYvMcYsJAwDWhcqdbX7KieVVuS0DhV8ovuyeheSTfPlxhnpTUlrb2ehSL_w4rsN4CHRPoi2MTh0RFcrEY/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Avalanche debris across the trail</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI5ghWbpRNXs40AkAwnl_EosEdpACiv-tV_A_sG8osp00P8YnwvuK74mQYkeQ3tPo8cEFxkgXpZfjtUoQQGLM6Eo9n4vlD8nqGxLGz3Fl9dv9UqbFl9WUNNe2W9zSTMsD2L6StsBDd3bPnjdhlw-14Hk-oYwxzRS7UC2ocWsIsr6M6g_L8Bv0DDbuyMBR0/s2048/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="2048" height="234" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI5ghWbpRNXs40AkAwnl_EosEdpACiv-tV_A_sG8osp00P8YnwvuK74mQYkeQ3tPo8cEFxkgXpZfjtUoQQGLM6Eo9n4vlD8nqGxLGz3Fl9dv9UqbFl9WUNNe2W9zSTMsD2L6StsBDd3bPnjdhlw-14Hk-oYwxzRS7UC2ocWsIsr6M6g_L8Bv0DDbuyMBR0/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Looking up towards the start of the avalanche</td></tr></tbody></table><p>Soon after crossing the avalanche path I ran into a couple of my hiking friends. I ended up skiing the rest of the day with Cindy, who is a very good cross country skier and instructor. The first few miles of this trail are very smooth and also groomed, making for easy travel. Once we reached the bridge over Archangel Creek, where I usually turn around, we were now traveling on multi-use trail well tracked by snow machines. That's where the nice groomed trail ends. Cindy was planning to go farther, so I decided to go too. The conditions were fairly good in spite of the choppy motorized tracks. At one point the tracks had actually left the road and gone off to the right. We could still see the road so followed it over varying conditions. I wondered how tough the trip back down was going to be. I'm fine on downhill with my downhill skis but it gets more challenging on skinny cross country skis where my heel is not locked down. We made it all the way to the gate where summer car travel ends. It was getting kind of late and we were both getting a bit tired. So we turned around at that point and started down. My dog, Bella only weighs 11 pounds but those little legs can really move. She was attached to my waist by her leash and was ready to break all speed records downhill back to the start. My lack of downhill skill on cross country skis immediately showed itself. I did fine on the firm snow but in the rutted breakable crusty areas not so much. I was continually begging Bella to slow down, which just sounded like a bunch of noise to her. I finally crashed into a pile of snow and had a terrible time finally getting myself back upright. By now Cindy and her dog were out of sight. I picked my way down as carefully as I could until suddenly Bella came to a complete stop. She has long hair and had accumulated gigantic icy snowballs the size of golfballs on all of her legs and was busy trying to bite them off. I tried breaking them off myself but with no luck. So at that point I took off my backpack and plopped her into it. At least she wasn't pulling me anymore but my shoulder and back were killing me. I think I smacked my right shoulder pretty hard on the fall. Happily I caught up with Cindy and we eventually reached the nice groomed trail again. I found I did best if I just stayed in the groomed tracks and it was good sailing the rest of the 8 mile round trip back to the car. It was a gorgeous little trip but I think I'd prefer to go that far back on my backcountry skis if I decide to do it again. Then I'd have the luxury of locked down heels and much better downhill control. </p><p>I now have a very tired dog!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOKC_fIRgak_GrNUFpLqE0yVh44m6U-Ip3U8cZw1se7XAS6vI98LO6KMI06V2VtvykbhyvEHHsU6jkZcCtmAnp_D7RTtHvmHPP1NBNlzCgilIPfaMjUYyeb79zgDVaXkIxfg29v5_gGo1DYmX0QAfxRkh7hW-qATyryHWcwM0AS_D8wddZ4SWQGNSTeAvV/s2048/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; My dog, Bella also had to have surgery that included spaying plus a number of mammary tumors. She was not able to do any major activity for two weeks. Yesterday she finally got her stitches out. So, today we had a really nice 4 mile hike up on the Gold Mint Trail in Hatcher Pass. Those cold temperatures are gone and it was actually over 40 degrees up there and here at home. Things are melting fast. There is major avalanche concern but we stayed down in the valley and there wasn't any sign of avalanche activity along the mountains above us. It was so nice to finally get out and go on more than a short walk up and down our street or the short walk around Reflections Lake. I could tell Bella was really happy to be out there trying to pull me off my feet the whole time. By mile 2 the snow was getting pretty deep and the trail was no longer well packed, so that's where we had to turn back since I didn't being my snowshoes. I think things will be back to normal now. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFWabwaFfoTMwICR_WdjLs2ln35bod1Y6h-zXJS_AfGlFTz-Rv7auGAzxlM46U7QKl2ml6M3VzlVzqPG2WH8NnJaaxEvmyJwo5CQkNNx6ClgXK5TWchcicit3OA1FgWdgwCZRCX-v9DYkZVcZfy55Z7c5su-h5sHHZfGivPOYKpLMaMEZfoJkqRjLq7_6u/s2048/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFWabwaFfoTMwICR_WdjLs2ln35bod1Y6h-zXJS_AfGlFTz-Rv7auGAzxlM46U7QKl2ml6M3VzlVzqPG2WH8NnJaaxEvmyJwo5CQkNNx6ClgXK5TWchcicit3OA1FgWdgwCZRCX-v9DYkZVcZfy55Z7c5su-h5sHHZfGivPOYKpLMaMEZfoJkqRjLq7_6u/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNZ3QT320jfLmQ5CabpABb6I9mDCR_Ma6P5J5EbBgPKxa3ymD2sZUY_C8mwyejw1rAZV2lqLU_aEZnd201TISCncABg78kgKH8U7tSbz3fze5SWi_SPBTBlRKFBumQqTvIhyWXmgys4MXTPY-Qogh5rDeYCQCwTW8STvvO7eCuX5U0oTf44feIKt31-ZwV/s2048/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNZ3QT320jfLmQ5CabpABb6I9mDCR_Ma6P5J5EbBgPKxa3ymD2sZUY_C8mwyejw1rAZV2lqLU_aEZnd201TISCncABg78kgKH8U7tSbz3fze5SWi_SPBTBlRKFBumQqTvIhyWXmgys4MXTPY-Qogh5rDeYCQCwTW8STvvO7eCuX5U0oTf44feIKt31-ZwV/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfC5Cre__h6CnhzAzZW0TpGPwbHstSdbR7fvbcs3g4gkfpqbzEg8E2JX2Em2YVSaYXalgnsbwyr01wb4ccl8wqskbhAa7if_5HG716W-DZ5eAQXabDBQhD5d9TDd9fMmfiE0uKEYUCjscqbHz8v4edGjsenjWVgpPVPNApz2eg2f511F_1zlyLwszyG__s/s2048/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfC5Cre__h6CnhzAzZW0TpGPwbHstSdbR7fvbcs3g4gkfpqbzEg8E2JX2Em2YVSaYXalgnsbwyr01wb4ccl8wqskbhAa7if_5HG716W-DZ5eAQXabDBQhD5d9TDd9fMmfiE0uKEYUCjscqbHz8v4edGjsenjWVgpPVPNApz2eg2f511F_1zlyLwszyG__s/s320/3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC4x5hZGhUqoxw9J6kTaTfzJJLXxeaJ9XC0JaYrIrO50TDKq5emt8578KAOiUTRiVye_ptAcK7-TZ4-lDVArdXSCsYDAPD0av2BWdNjx4CR4eY0ojcQyB_ibiwpv_Nx27txpcQ7Yem7a4C1XbpKbQkT5WiOTi7FYPkyjN9XgLpcGpJXbe11JVlOPOJ9zUN/s2048/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC4x5hZGhUqoxw9J6kTaTfzJJLXxeaJ9XC0JaYrIrO50TDKq5emt8578KAOiUTRiVye_ptAcK7-TZ4-lDVArdXSCsYDAPD0av2BWdNjx4CR4eY0ojcQyB_ibiwpv_Nx27txpcQ7Yem7a4C1XbpKbQkT5WiOTi7FYPkyjN9XgLpcGpJXbe11JVlOPOJ9zUN/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-71239014939144888612024-01-19T19:47:00.001-09:002024-01-19T19:47:23.256-09:00Archangel Road Ski with Pam and The Dogs<p> I often hike or ski with my friend Pam on Fridays. When I told her how nice the conditions were on Archangel Road, she wanted to meet up there and ski it with me. It was Bella's first time to do a hike or ski with another dog. I was happy that she got along well with Dahla, Pam's Lhasa Apso. I think they will be great friends. We were in the shade most of the way out to the bridge and once again, Bella got cold. I ended up carrying her in my backpack for part of the distance. But on the way back we were in the sunshine and it had warmed up considerably, so she ran all the way back, pulling me on my skis. Conditions were even better than on Wednesday because the groomer kept passing by and smoothing out the trail. It was perfect conditions. Although we did have to move out of his way at times. We went about 4 and a half miles round trip. After our ski, we went up to the Hatcher Pass Lodge and had a nice lunch. It's a great place to eat because they are fine with us bringing our dogs in with us. They behaved quite well also. It was a gorgeous day.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlhycvIUCMVFNfKjttEz6maJcDHKRGR3F4QJr01MARD7VhsSqqprsmx5yLvKi1FmXwifHNiFr0s5O9TyR1rP2XYsxu5Ph87eQPmoXHGXtfwbG45Mfim8i73ISSLSrJ2Id9YkAnm_Mb1zpJWXPzwf2PNKBl1GaYp5FsdpC0JT-Ft966kup0Cz8yjZDSqoCt/s2048/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlhycvIUCMVFNfKjttEz6maJcDHKRGR3F4QJr01MARD7VhsSqqprsmx5yLvKi1FmXwifHNiFr0s5O9TyR1rP2XYsxu5Ph87eQPmoXHGXtfwbG45Mfim8i73ISSLSrJ2Id9YkAnm_Mb1zpJWXPzwf2PNKBl1GaYp5FsdpC0JT-Ft966kup0Cz8yjZDSqoCt/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRPXO3Z3Q2Q93ujDAlgTL3KzB3vptNYnofKr-Mj_kKMHab0xKPXQ6DX3g1BPUt0E-BBgB5qNxtf5wlqnEGgsijqc6nfNg8mrDIAFtnNHmlv-832Cu6ByaV5v_WM19cZDJdVjdSRq0LqsUvjRfeQr-Sffk6dEY9kE5CupkKceaWxLigf-OjC3qWHgH30KlO/s2048/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRPXO3Z3Q2Q93ujDAlgTL3KzB3vptNYnofKr-Mj_kKMHab0xKPXQ6DX3g1BPUt0E-BBgB5qNxtf5wlqnEGgsijqc6nfNg8mrDIAFtnNHmlv-832Cu6ByaV5v_WM19cZDJdVjdSRq0LqsUvjRfeQr-Sffk6dEY9kE5CupkKceaWxLigf-OjC3qWHgH30KlO/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj62WdvPX5L-IbmhhWzM30Q6efHjWEoWOv6oUznJ31yr-bZIFH9pNXV_8h2M6xHHk2Zqf8K2n8bKHWSXwGxh9kICAn_0sHv06OTfVOtiTcFMda5PEB0BaUbKXc2JjEJcZ0W8ZhAh5R4GIPv3m5DPDh90qoEYFiuYgToHiY2FC6evdW0F8cmaCCa641CMiZ7/s2048/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj62WdvPX5L-IbmhhWzM30Q6efHjWEoWOv6oUznJ31yr-bZIFH9pNXV_8h2M6xHHk2Zqf8K2n8bKHWSXwGxh9kICAn_0sHv06OTfVOtiTcFMda5PEB0BaUbKXc2JjEJcZ0W8ZhAh5R4GIPv3m5DPDh90qoEYFiuYgToHiY2FC6evdW0F8cmaCCa641CMiZ7/s320/3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy0-5QlQYReQBVJXeLOWfuV6Ugwd2MFh6Bx_3ufBS93-Dan5jAku0xwXA_Xh_7UL5yK7otONFMEsbW-doV1DisrCfGV45qhMho4A1NI6ZXBUfsZuVe1Fu5hyuxSa14ZB3pMM1nmFV2q8fntWFs9BHI___0EPYLNGQKwtNiYOPxsUr9nlH-Nr8tpVYmhX3T/s2048/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjy0-5QlQYReQBVJXeLOWfuV6Ugwd2MFh6Bx_3ufBS93-Dan5jAku0xwXA_Xh_7UL5yK7otONFMEsbW-doV1DisrCfGV45qhMho4A1NI6ZXBUfsZuVe1Fu5hyuxSa14ZB3pMM1nmFV2q8fntWFs9BHI___0EPYLNGQKwtNiYOPxsUr9nlH-Nr8tpVYmhX3T/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-22387114381933677272024-01-17T20:34:00.001-09:002024-01-17T20:34:27.390-09:00Archangel Road Ski<p> Drove up to Hatcher Pass hoping I could get away from the horrendous winds down in the valley. It was beautiful and calm up there. I skijored with Bella on the nice groomed trail. After awhile, she started slowing down and lifting her paws. I could tell her feet were getting cold. I have some booties for her but they fall off. When I get home I plan to make them a little smaller in hopes that they will stay on. Unlike my previous dog, she seems quite tolerant of them. I just had a small day pack with me, but figured she would probably fit into it. It would be a tight fit and I wondered how comfortable it would be since she weighs nearly 12 pounds. I managed to squeeze her in and she seemed quite comfortable. I was surprised how comfortable I was with the extra weight. I continued on to the bridge, where they generally discontinue the grooming. Just before the bridge the trail gets pretty rough because at that point snow machines are allowed. At the bridge we were no longer in the sun, so I kept her in the backpack. Once back in sunshine on our way back, I let her out again. I could tell it was warmer now, and she ran the whole way back without lifting her paws from the cold. The whole trip was 4.6 miles and a beautiful little ski hike. Always a gorgeous place to hike or ski.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHYgejcTUPYxgpH-TPV9H4zUm8Me8i7X661Y0iZHP-cyRwOhjS3a8dyJ5ntQP1ORFO7ydhNUyTXEiW7vvuEDpHn_o3J8wcXcNzrczj1OAX34HbDkm03C-gl9N2VxyePgDPxZ24Dddu9MMv-kEMDFh2iVKAaqYW0c3uKU8aBY23XxHnUvOc9cT0aaNaiDM8/s2048/1%2017%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHYgejcTUPYxgpH-TPV9H4zUm8Me8i7X661Y0iZHP-cyRwOhjS3a8dyJ5ntQP1ORFO7ydhNUyTXEiW7vvuEDpHn_o3J8wcXcNzrczj1OAX34HbDkm03C-gl9N2VxyePgDPxZ24Dddu9MMv-kEMDFh2iVKAaqYW0c3uKU8aBY23XxHnUvOc9cT0aaNaiDM8/s320/1%2017%201.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlEceq1BiLasC445YGXEQ0ciA9XjcdfNchfms8t3u8TkWx09rQK_mb-iwDRigEDYac3SvJxjvbd-t_wEM3rwByY669muuOYtP5OEf2wjhjAdQEWYjrpwXOcxjjaSt3Hmp3trsdmZ4ypY1oWWJwJjo6KXpnmbmKiy6KBHNuWNcm9dyU3wIyOaJvtUz6XQVU/s2048/1%2017%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlEceq1BiLasC445YGXEQ0ciA9XjcdfNchfms8t3u8TkWx09rQK_mb-iwDRigEDYac3SvJxjvbd-t_wEM3rwByY669muuOYtP5OEf2wjhjAdQEWYjrpwXOcxjjaSt3Hmp3trsdmZ4ypY1oWWJwJjo6KXpnmbmKiy6KBHNuWNcm9dyU3wIyOaJvtUz6XQVU/s320/1%2017%202.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrK1eNqVZ7faplODOi9-57sMICxtx1GC3pB9cBZU9UWQuiSZdFKoTvrKR39XnDqPx7T4XEtEkPM7-BBPcxTaKbZz_2fogpy2BzAC0OW3k-cfAEctrJEzfZxa5EFZUQY9hv3zp6sMwQID1QBsT2H14jN7ZqnzUtkDHySFCHoT8pn_UR9-MqYBPPloPPLBxJ/s2048/1%2017%203.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrK1eNqVZ7faplODOi9-57sMICxtx1GC3pB9cBZU9UWQuiSZdFKoTvrKR39XnDqPx7T4XEtEkPM7-BBPcxTaKbZz_2fogpy2BzAC0OW3k-cfAEctrJEzfZxa5EFZUQY9hv3zp6sMwQID1QBsT2H14jN7ZqnzUtkDHySFCHoT8pn_UR9-MqYBPPloPPLBxJ/s320/1%2017%203.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Archangel Creek Bridge, our turn around point.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqm4iigphPP8CF8InRH8Ie_6_SfTSM4rTa1SUiCGup-9Q3qx6FlZ5x4pQdNXnCysvKwltw0FWxRlEnjMkeIeYn2Tom0_933x9RBP6A4lsHi6I2Bk-NE9u4dtaJvdOxYzVSVuRoo_sjmkeyInNtv1RlvfY2qbWGosD51JXoveqidaw-Y7Qe2Czi-9izTnHh/s2048/1%2017%204.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqm4iigphPP8CF8InRH8Ie_6_SfTSM4rTa1SUiCGup-9Q3qx6FlZ5x4pQdNXnCysvKwltw0FWxRlEnjMkeIeYn2Tom0_933x9RBP6A4lsHi6I2Bk-NE9u4dtaJvdOxYzVSVuRoo_sjmkeyInNtv1RlvfY2qbWGosD51JXoveqidaw-Y7Qe2Czi-9izTnHh/s320/1%2017%204.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhezTFEEhGv9LNiDTcZQ16jEgRDLb7xuo2xmNOw8ViSTIYI5dVCq70NfGwQiud4SSUJmTA-6dswHQMe1lGuw0mZegzplIoTNAM8SBP7Iay0wTgi3riShyphenhyphendlxOY4qu6cKJG-C-NtoDPWVP9N8YH2ZKP-ThbDBJ3OezR9yv8pK4kgobqQ5xJMbPPrKFtef7i9/s2048/1%2017%205.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhezTFEEhGv9LNiDTcZQ16jEgRDLb7xuo2xmNOw8ViSTIYI5dVCq70NfGwQiud4SSUJmTA-6dswHQMe1lGuw0mZegzplIoTNAM8SBP7Iay0wTgi3riShyphenhyphendlxOY4qu6cKJG-C-NtoDPWVP9N8YH2ZKP-ThbDBJ3OezR9yv8pK4kgobqQ5xJMbPPrKFtef7i9/s320/1%2017%205.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-55916702896373611082024-01-13T20:29:00.003-09:002024-01-13T20:29:57.974-09:00Rabbit Slough/Palmer Slough<p> I met with a group of the Valley Wanderers by the dock at the end of Rabbit Slough Road. we skied a total of 7.2 miles round trip in the downstream direction. It was perfect for skiing except for a few spots of overflow that had frozen causing some icy spots. Bella ran the whole way. About halfway out to our turn around spot at mile 3.6, a black lab came out of nowhere and walked with us, antagonizing Bella periodically. Fortunately they were able to refrain from getting into a dog fight to which Bella would have been greatly disadvantaged. We saw a couple of guys on fat tire bikes and shortly before we got back to our cars, we found the owner of the black lab, who finally had her on a leash. Otherwise, we had the whole place to ourselves. I'm still a little nervous around big dogs, especially when they are running loose. But at least this one was fairly well behaved. I don't want to see Bella get injured or killed the way Baby was. I'm a very protective dog mom now. She is a great hiking and skiing companion. It was beautiful and wild out there today. We could have continued for a few more hours, but everyone was getting tired and ready to turn around. I love this area in all seasons. I've paddled my kayak and canoe in both directions in the summer. There were lots of moose tracks but we never did see the moose. But we saw beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR-ndQUq80280gzv568WXNschRAS0vodQmTjlzVdWiGA7m4uA9r1nJ6QZ274YYF8i4LNLr-dmh_gSVHlIgNKzlDf9Dk4R6hFNgVLAmoozhv6hyo1GC9tugMEbKzdOh5DPpUU_Pb9afnppVLqCwuilklOnVChYIT-t0IBbIxEPoRhHhPWwVwnSNPphVMEmF/s2048/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; But I wasn't sure what the conditions would be like. I didn't want to commit to the trip if the snow was too deep for Bella, my little dog. She had a lot of trouble on Lazy Mountain recently in the deep snow. But we skied about 4 miles along the Palmer Slough, which is really the name of that slow moving frozen creek. We found the conditions were perfect. Snow machines had packed down a nice smooth trail for us. So I'll plan to join the others for a longer trip tomorrow. Bella is a great skijoring dog. She tends to run out in front and give me a little extra momentum on my skis. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv_eHuT-DQQ5wJ8cVu11kUTcSyVOMg1Xw7o1w2BsfZkgKkS1gOZYbqjdEpSf89wmOaevCe3vAVuHYS55ZRYoc1lnL7a7g2l5xVKZLshv7Em7QEim2ieus0DowEvneg1qpsGenMMj79Nh5u4V2nGJFsxnbrFTxdyk0gjk1AdACvQS9kCCqaWJiHATpsiK5t/s2048/1%2012%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv_eHuT-DQQ5wJ8cVu11kUTcSyVOMg1Xw7o1w2BsfZkgKkS1gOZYbqjdEpSf89wmOaevCe3vAVuHYS55ZRYoc1lnL7a7g2l5xVKZLshv7Em7QEim2ieus0DowEvneg1qpsGenMMj79Nh5u4V2nGJFsxnbrFTxdyk0gjk1AdACvQS9kCCqaWJiHATpsiK5t/s320/1%2012%201.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSDXfh_oYxox09TC1C6qk3_c3VQmL9smGdc5AWdQ9TYMvW1x3YXz9WZaQNTru2VrTFVRNHfY5egzV-STHtfoMV8hIkhOw0vqk_iz5_62aCx_ZClzue3BqYkZT-EitcrLORjupTPETFJ5DrZbcafluST8ElirJyYGvLTQhOgX7XqSwSqEyBDIqf03tWhg0M/s2048/1%2012%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSDXfh_oYxox09TC1C6qk3_c3VQmL9smGdc5AWdQ9TYMvW1x3YXz9WZaQNTru2VrTFVRNHfY5egzV-STHtfoMV8hIkhOw0vqk_iz5_62aCx_ZClzue3BqYkZT-EitcrLORjupTPETFJ5DrZbcafluST8ElirJyYGvLTQhOgX7XqSwSqEyBDIqf03tWhg0M/s320/1%2012%202.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCRrT9DsGSsGFeMKHhptTP1bIemSCyIGPHic3WRhh-woHPkmSFaeYQnQjS6M1MPvDO7-XUG3Ij9ZLPfh-aT-SVAmhM8wWqn4foSWUkUQbvlPL5CSmB4luUM7HRQTlOGo5ujg6t41AMSQVDRoMpm6q70muoCk0fHclzHQZAgmr0GBUwEpq5tQ89ngFagKJM/s2048/1%2012%203.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCRrT9DsGSsGFeMKHhptTP1bIemSCyIGPHic3WRhh-woHPkmSFaeYQnQjS6M1MPvDO7-XUG3Ij9ZLPfh-aT-SVAmhM8wWqn4foSWUkUQbvlPL5CSmB4luUM7HRQTlOGo5ujg6t41AMSQVDRoMpm6q70muoCk0fHclzHQZAgmr0GBUwEpq5tQ89ngFagKJM/s320/1%2012%203.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgfZgd0w5ijZGJhM9qnee3MLNFQcVWe3Xofp1qXWcc6GmYTylkDie9FantLUZlJmHy7e9pxFlfnBMlSG2vokgy68IREj76BgG8qGNoVAKBLYYuPE0J4V7e7xmgEEnE2WZ5c9Ta41T-Y1uxW7PIdwYG4Z4AG-EWPXwPBhGQImh5wHN2ETbjawqIUbvLnq-R/s2048/1%2012%204.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgfZgd0w5ijZGJhM9qnee3MLNFQcVWe3Xofp1qXWcc6GmYTylkDie9FantLUZlJmHy7e9pxFlfnBMlSG2vokgy68IREj76BgG8qGNoVAKBLYYuPE0J4V7e7xmgEEnE2WZ5c9Ta41T-Y1uxW7PIdwYG4Z4AG-EWPXwPBhGQImh5wHN2ETbjawqIUbvLnq-R/s320/1%2012%204.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p></p>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-79350000660488943522024-01-11T18:40:00.001-09:002024-01-11T18:40:24.746-09:00Eklutna Lakeside Trail<p> I intended to ski at Rabbit Slough today to check out the conditions. But when I got there a man came to my window and asked if I could wait about 20 minutes because they were shooting a commercial there. I promptly turned around and drove up to Eklutna Lake. I was surprised to see that there wasn't a single car in the parking lot. I had the entire place all to myself. It looked good for skiing but I was not sure so decided to first try walking. It turned out to be perfect for skiing but by the time I had walked a few feet, it just seemed easier to continue walking. Bella seemed to really like the trail. It was so well packed that I'm wondering if they had actually groomed it for skiing. I have never heard of that happening before, but it was perfect conditions for just about anything. I wanted to visit the place of Baby's memorial so we left the upper groomed trail and went through the deeper snow on the lower trail to see if we could still find it. Bella wasn't quite as happy with the deeper snow. Shortly before reaching the memorial, I scooped her up and carried her. I was surprised to see a large bull moose down on the lake shore. I managed to get a couple of photos by zooming in with my iPhone. I was glad he didn't decide to come up the hill and join us. I continued past the memorial to the next exit to the upper trail. Bella was very happy to be back on the hard packed snow. We practically ran the whole way back to the car. The whole distance was only about 3.5 miles. But it was pretty cold and I was glad to get back. I've decided it's time to start using my heavier Canada Goose parka. I enjoyed having the whole lake to myself.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD8L3xmYMdxD0WJyqY9OjlY9sqObmOWK1ZnrgaYga9nQlWYQyvKA4bV7b3RR2oRBpIkItBt5PhwtMz7UQ1YHbIqNOtTCfi-Ztc-mrF8jPJNpAZG3aebjLfOKA2yideG8bazGVaBR-QAKk2qr_2xoLmK3Z-7fKxG_Xlcf0nfeD5GnrqB5JzQfjKzFozCuBQ/s4032/IMG_6411.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I did a bunch of snow shoveling this morning and just took our usual little walk around Reflections Lake. It was really spectacular there today. I love how the sun lights up the mountains in winter. It's such a beautiful little place. It was really chilly out there today though. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdWVmYhyHWP6_YG0Yw-570SCMnmiIThZqPVc8KwYwT9hW4T1IKdVpmEFxbPNFiy8nBAtv05sLgKNtivxIzZ7sDv3-KbY0IRZIx9MJ1DWw0AVnoqQ3JIrdtFQiH_9tv9Mwy6bQMZuE-SY05tgx00aS8rPSR0ZwjaHHcyIf2_phFu7YbvIfhO5d6Ziy80mzZ/s2048/8%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1840" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdWVmYhyHWP6_YG0Yw-570SCMnmiIThZqPVc8KwYwT9hW4T1IKdVpmEFxbPNFiy8nBAtv05sLgKNtivxIzZ7sDv3-KbY0IRZIx9MJ1DWw0AVnoqQ3JIrdtFQiH_9tv9Mwy6bQMZuE-SY05tgx00aS8rPSR0ZwjaHHcyIf2_phFu7YbvIfhO5d6Ziy80mzZ/s320/8%201.jpg" width="288" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSTZ0AWLvTMLokhPsOz6ZU_xnLhS7UreYcbNiGN0gKriOiq_V0uJ5vcNYD6Q9aGIVQU0thf9748Nk7xy9wXPGTDjXGyWSqmeZGZLsnfi54TBh2wsGdrbZF8tLJdkBrC_QDCfiNSv5zIEWIJlZChycDvRFPCZbBOghyphenhyphencGL8yivSlJ8RAqAfpfrDf7Wg4pkL/s2048/8%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSTZ0AWLvTMLokhPsOz6ZU_xnLhS7UreYcbNiGN0gKriOiq_V0uJ5vcNYD6Q9aGIVQU0thf9748Nk7xy9wXPGTDjXGyWSqmeZGZLsnfi54TBh2wsGdrbZF8tLJdkBrC_QDCfiNSv5zIEWIJlZChycDvRFPCZbBOghyphenhyphencGL8yivSlJ8RAqAfpfrDf7Wg4pkL/s320/8%202.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT1Hoxhbg4JzieArK862uQRSJEEK8ZtEz0bXwKfgGOl084kGujOxHLwfluarZKi8_yQEcSmYoO-N3TnmMx37J5oCZxmdD0eWzlW2NBWKROGj2PkcsVrYrBqRJzl0zgcwvZMq4ullSkWR6h7kgOYQ4h88JQJYvuHe7LazE3kNpeScq5P9PzCBsBV7_51bJ9/s2048/8%203.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjT1Hoxhbg4JzieArK862uQRSJEEK8ZtEz0bXwKfgGOl084kGujOxHLwfluarZKi8_yQEcSmYoO-N3TnmMx37J5oCZxmdD0eWzlW2NBWKROGj2PkcsVrYrBqRJzl0zgcwvZMq4ullSkWR6h7kgOYQ4h88JQJYvuHe7LazE3kNpeScq5P9PzCBsBV7_51bJ9/s320/8%203.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg-Dt03bUw-LmiareSHcC4LlhypENoyHvCJ9FHT3kgc4bUVl6B8JTE_uo9FeoTMWo2LjGhyDKs1fJBpOexmfMZIinNK0Dp9JVZHjcgy1FgT3py08PSK22EKD47In4MML93s3REZ4Pdhr7eqkaP87xw9eCOYCytZRJ8sfgS30CicFUIY96_7zh67vSS9Pb7/s960/8%204.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg-Dt03bUw-LmiareSHcC4LlhypENoyHvCJ9FHT3kgc4bUVl6B8JTE_uo9FeoTMWo2LjGhyDKs1fJBpOexmfMZIinNK0Dp9JVZHjcgy1FgT3py08PSK22EKD47In4MML93s3REZ4Pdhr7eqkaP87xw9eCOYCytZRJ8sfgS30CicFUIY96_7zh67vSS9Pb7/s320/8%204.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7BkBXk2cYBk9Wms2YUisj951CpwsBU_1elS1MvK4gsSwGpmJgBds-yXfxM2y-mxBTfLeZJOknndMlq_kJmhIIpLIlUlAxAW4brqZZUEVLeVW9jPdPfZdqr39j_I86pNtMe2zxEK6T4TtS9uyqSDAs8vc5Gz6OYu2LA_Ke-4tMdk7hCezh1L8eLZwH-dK6/s2048/8%205.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7BkBXk2cYBk9Wms2YUisj951CpwsBU_1elS1MvK4gsSwGpmJgBds-yXfxM2y-mxBTfLeZJOknndMlq_kJmhIIpLIlUlAxAW4brqZZUEVLeVW9jPdPfZdqr39j_I86pNtMe2zxEK6T4TtS9uyqSDAs8vc5Gz6OYu2LA_Ke-4tMdk7hCezh1L8eLZwH-dK6/s320/8%205.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-2574817544171690542024-01-07T21:08:00.031-09:002024-01-09T21:19:12.520-09:00Skeetawk<p> Between Christmas, a new dog, food poisoning from Christmas dinner, and some horrible weather, I have not had a chance to get up to the Skeetawk Ski Area to get in a Ski Patrol duty day. I finally went up for my first day downhill skiing this season. I couldn't leave the dog home for the whole 8 hours so brought her along. She stayed in the car bundled up in her blankets. I came down at least every hour to hour and a half and warmed up the car and took her for little walks around the parking lot. Most of the time I found her sound asleep under her blankets. It was a pretty good day and not terribly crowded for a Sunday. We started out before sunrise and ended in the dark doing the sweep wearing our headlamps. We do have lights on the slopes now. It wasn't a great day for pictures but I did do one selfie with Bella inside my car. </p><p>It was nice to get out skiing. Once I convince her to use the doggie door, I will probably be able to leave her home. But it was kind of fun visiting her in between runs. She didn't seem to mind it too much.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8m-JWbdeL3Ci9kzVQHpnnP1bC3K8gtQA79YoGHJoI4J-55X-gHPsIietkqumBdAllRLSY8TErezmaft-BZ4X1bKpKJD11eW-F4tlbwgjCnbyMCQNNt-Wco3LW18Q3aJBEa52AMsEmuz7-wMLbJoPJKH6aVqz8hkNxD0PTpwxMxeAObLd_eQ-buhwVhVb6/s2048/ski.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8m-JWbdeL3Ci9kzVQHpnnP1bC3K8gtQA79YoGHJoI4J-55X-gHPsIietkqumBdAllRLSY8TErezmaft-BZ4X1bKpKJD11eW-F4tlbwgjCnbyMCQNNt-Wco3LW18Q3aJBEa52AMsEmuz7-wMLbJoPJKH6aVqz8hkNxD0PTpwxMxeAObLd_eQ-buhwVhVb6/s320/ski.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-37973741224260182642024-01-06T20:50:00.042-09:002024-01-09T21:07:57.964-09:00Lazy Mountain Hike<p>Bella and I met with the Valley Wanderers at the Lazy Mountain Trailhead, before the actual sunrise. Their plan was to hike the steep main trail to the picnic table at the junction of the longer, more gradual Lazy Moose Trail, then descend that trail, avoiding the slippery steepness of the main trail. I always prefer to go all the way to the top of the mountain rather then end the climb at the table. But today I just didn't seem to have any energy. I'm often the slowest of this group, but today I was really dragging. Sandy tends to like a slower pace so she stayed with me as I slowly plodded my way up. I have no idea why I felt so tired, but we did finally reach the picnic table. The others had been waiting for a while so they took off down Lazy Moose. The steep trail was well packed down and all we needed were microspikes. But as soon as we started down Lazy Moose, our snowshoes were definitely needed. It was hardly packed at all. In fact, I think the only tracks were made by the rest of our group that had started down ahead of Sandy, Bella and me. I was relieved to be heading down and my snowshoes made travel easy even though the snow was quite deep. But Bella wasn't a fan at all. The snow was deeper than her body. After only a very short distance, she stopped and started trying to back out of her harness, she even worked her way right out of her winter coat. She was determined to get out of that deep snow. I had to tell Sandy to go on without us because I didn't want to carry the dog. I didn't have a pack on that would work well for carrying her either. We went back to the picnic table and Bella took off running back down the steep icy trail as fast as her little legs could carry her. I ended up becoming a mountain runner most of the way since I always keep her on her leash. I think that was my quickest trip ever back down that trail. I spent most of the time shouting, slow down, please, slow slow slow. Words she obviously chose to ignore. I made it all the way to the tiny bridge just above the parking lot before she finally pulled me over, landing on my knees. It was an odd hike, slightly disappointing, but still a beautiful day to be out there in the mountains. The sunrise was amazing too. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8tv2NEaXjvoasVkMQwAg8x3hlR75ZExzB3JHvkCVVz7XErRfmrsAyuJdVDSPJukA-N2VZixPXIsLHfGyKodTF8TMyvfktCtViRIRBU8j9bdVpP011vCLZcFJ7HgzpzIoQ07thEhIQHZYrCem2CT_LqUhHrOLFvEzWRcRykopXs5FEhA6waDZoAz1DpVN_/s2048/6%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; The weather looked great and the road was in good condition. I made it almost halfway to the lake when traffic came to a dead stop. There were only a couple of cars ahead of me, but I could see that a large trailer had jackknifed and partially lodged itself into the snowbank. It quickly looked like a major project to get that huge vehicle out of the way to clear the road. I decided after a couple of minutes that I really didn't need to go to Eklutna Lake today. So I turned around and went back down the road. Instead, I pulled into the Thunderbird Falls trailhead parking lot. I love this trail. It's only about 3 miles round trip if you descend all the way to the base of the falls. Bella and I walked to the overlook then down to the creek and to the base of the falls. There was so much snow that you could hardly see the waterfall but there were breaks in the ice where you could see it was still running. At one point the trees were so heavily loaded that I had to crawl under the branches to follow the trail. It was well packed and I didn't need snowshoes, although microspikes were very helpful. We only ran into a couple other hikers. So it was very peaceful. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgywh4bQWQppSc6N6xZDqbngaEA7TiEwyld3Irzq7NjDfTmfdBK0i9PDy40hzV9kzeOj32AHFdDrv6ZAK8iW-cLrlxla6106hzBnNBrZEY9myxBfF75UxcbLKWxXLr_LvYxRdfAmEGHJLiWk7OmwLrwD3m1HP9bLudeW6lwKn23IiwaJiwwOqju_ne06zPo/s2048/5%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I've been getting supplies and dog food and other things needed to keep Bella happy and well fed. We've been doing our daily morning walks in the dark, but it's always nice to take the beautiful one mile stroll around the lake in the daylight. Bella enjoys all the different smells because this is often a very popular trail for people who want to take their dogs for a short outing. The sun was bright on the mountain peaks making for some interesting views beneath the low clouds. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ddwGYLe1rBG1O01M6rbGVJL7WlKIZJmdlJyKks0wxXCSkg4EYf3IsNsC78qLS-7FY_FtjMds49pCdzFVVD9QBiBsE4hbb5kwALz7dyISYcsUWM6VtvEoH1RZzmCOKKdnDBoFj0WOXrr-7nD21Y0RXcjbpMdpKp2N99mKWL049PvIA31dEZ1sxGiSZaZV/s2048/4%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1320" data-original-width="2048" height="206" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ddwGYLe1rBG1O01M6rbGVJL7WlKIZJmdlJyKks0wxXCSkg4EYf3IsNsC78qLS-7FY_FtjMds49pCdzFVVD9QBiBsE4hbb5kwALz7dyISYcsUWM6VtvEoH1RZzmCOKKdnDBoFj0WOXrr-7nD21Y0RXcjbpMdpKp2N99mKWL049PvIA31dEZ1sxGiSZaZV/s320/4%201.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZlAkmRGnMR4IN6ZIan7_NH1YIUUDuN1_MkTPcmPEOJVlDI5i1hlNX5sbfadMJS5TIexpkFK3tq6O05jQiq_8IiFJV-OczLivNWt9aoruX7z_Moh1uIhJx2UD9JZ3qs0SvK09Stncq8XyEBK697X150pDBCvvS3gesaodaxcXUg1Tftw7d6xSJBA2IMsJG/s2048/4%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZlAkmRGnMR4IN6ZIan7_NH1YIUUDuN1_MkTPcmPEOJVlDI5i1hlNX5sbfadMJS5TIexpkFK3tq6O05jQiq_8IiFJV-OczLivNWt9aoruX7z_Moh1uIhJx2UD9JZ3qs0SvK09Stncq8XyEBK697X150pDBCvvS3gesaodaxcXUg1Tftw7d6xSJBA2IMsJG/s320/4%202.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJCzthZFhOEfwXVGRix_tlrdocE0bfDI1OWMv4yYB7oqmOC2mt0G6Cok1PH3gscIhiuT-X1LiaHkLcR5rX95DUZpKWQi32S_2b4PfJ0rtD7XOpa2DpeKmI-4y7G6rB5yP5CkNPmVvAhy6qoZAddOh9PyGq7kUMXaP-q_mEDiY2hwS6DlCBPcKksR0thRB3/s2048/4%203.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJCzthZFhOEfwXVGRix_tlrdocE0bfDI1OWMv4yYB7oqmOC2mt0G6Cok1PH3gscIhiuT-X1LiaHkLcR5rX95DUZpKWQi32S_2b4PfJ0rtD7XOpa2DpeKmI-4y7G6rB5yP5CkNPmVvAhy6qoZAddOh9PyGq7kUMXaP-q_mEDiY2hwS6DlCBPcKksR0thRB3/s320/4%203.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-84389444979872067332024-01-02T20:24:00.010-09:002024-01-09T20:28:36.374-09:00Reflections Lake<p>It was a beautiful day with fresh snow on the trees at Reflections Lake. This was Baby's favorite spot so I thought I'd take such a beautiful day to introduce this lovely trail to my new dog buddy, Bella. I think she liked it. It has been windy in town but seems to have missed this spot. The snow was still heavy on the trees, making everything magical.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP82jfg7ZRKeomZImtPQN81hZj8SU8l1AHjhU8MlTyuRKbSznBtc8z6YHbH8iacXTJ9YfUeAhqeddeP39B-Lkz5aCE-FqPZhmJW1RUe5JTm33VYoGK9_rgCZKjSQBQe4PQw62BRsDE0YUiJwDQ7UtyedLf5YFkTdhviT5_6Ddk6lUvM45XAoIVC6kLpaiN/s2048/2%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP82jfg7ZRKeomZImtPQN81hZj8SU8l1AHjhU8MlTyuRKbSznBtc8z6YHbH8iacXTJ9YfUeAhqeddeP39B-Lkz5aCE-FqPZhmJW1RUe5JTm33VYoGK9_rgCZKjSQBQe4PQw62BRsDE0YUiJwDQ7UtyedLf5YFkTdhviT5_6Ddk6lUvM45XAoIVC6kLpaiN/s320/2%201.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi99ANaP2FR7TzzrzDt_YUrLiTz9wUbBYd8hVvNaRppApXhq8uwJ1dZ8xz9ABptKesDy4qFKJl0M1Xxur-3AimTK9QXKGo_-w_1w7L5R0qn9s_cOdUeSmR_129MlMdw5RQyPKxYXfnfKYSrT6VAYwhtADjyzmwWwSl8l0nwzNLVuHX8LsXtWj6fX4M1YROF/s2048/2%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi99ANaP2FR7TzzrzDt_YUrLiTz9wUbBYd8hVvNaRppApXhq8uwJ1dZ8xz9ABptKesDy4qFKJl0M1Xxur-3AimTK9QXKGo_-w_1w7L5R0qn9s_cOdUeSmR_129MlMdw5RQyPKxYXfnfKYSrT6VAYwhtADjyzmwWwSl8l0nwzNLVuHX8LsXtWj6fX4M1YROF/s320/2%202.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEoXq3cffDYmTv19CeJ-L7L6AjmZzZXgkV31atxar3LIUzdCqWiH7PbZQCcIOqQHj8cHulPMzHPxfTzolRhbReqV_kuvu2GY4R-bB7Iagq-cZNNCoB-u97J99eN_YeC3CgnL-rMrgCdNGVRYCT3qbxvdAYheEBkJ2GQ4R7ivYgZCsxsfl-IgyFXfzfXH1k/s2048/2%203.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEoXq3cffDYmTv19CeJ-L7L6AjmZzZXgkV31atxar3LIUzdCqWiH7PbZQCcIOqQHj8cHulPMzHPxfTzolRhbReqV_kuvu2GY4R-bB7Iagq-cZNNCoB-u97J99eN_YeC3CgnL-rMrgCdNGVRYCT3qbxvdAYheEBkJ2GQ4R7ivYgZCsxsfl-IgyFXfzfXH1k/s320/2%203.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgnPe33SvC_-znZWOR2HGTom9J-Dw6cGkIeRRmnr666ACj2pnS7Y_9cYaLjF646ziPoC8ej-7j1obe1bfHKT-nt7ryos4ztR-EyL38JmAn5w2DCruHml1RfITBWX201v4jk0sHbZ6cTFAdwAwsmlHDBw7D0xm3xL8mCYtK1hZw7TyB4rPRBWGbnQ0XpFw8/s2048/2%204.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgnPe33SvC_-znZWOR2HGTom9J-Dw6cGkIeRRmnr666ACj2pnS7Y_9cYaLjF646ziPoC8ej-7j1obe1bfHKT-nt7ryos4ztR-EyL38JmAn5w2DCruHml1RfITBWX201v4jk0sHbZ6cTFAdwAwsmlHDBw7D0xm3xL8mCYtK1hZw7TyB4rPRBWGbnQ0XpFw8/s320/2%204.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwM78q5ECSL16omxy_RqbT0AseEkXXqQOIA8NGo0GFg07xTWeGxIEd-up7_MTP43R75XZSpjHgNyuYqpRSzPU3wDH5EIsxuJFS5_npCGemOPr9mA8rkKjsoGgDZWgMLXjotacO1_D989E_HQxadJYjajWQSrE_gETV-dm8q2uWQESKUHrQpDii1C5lO8-R/s2048/2%205.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwM78q5ECSL16omxy_RqbT0AseEkXXqQOIA8NGo0GFg07xTWeGxIEd-up7_MTP43R75XZSpjHgNyuYqpRSzPU3wDH5EIsxuJFS5_npCGemOPr9mA8rkKjsoGgDZWgMLXjotacO1_D989E_HQxadJYjajWQSrE_gETV-dm8q2uWQESKUHrQpDii1C5lO8-R/s320/2%205.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p></p>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-44310789439909673952024-01-01T19:48:00.000-09:002024-01-01T19:48:06.250-09:00Happy New Year Sunrise Snowshoe Hike<p> I met with 12 other of the Valley Wanderers at Government Peak Recreation Area early this morning. We hiked the 3 mile round trip steep snowshoe trail up the Government Peak Race Trail to the second picnic table to see the first sunrise of the new year. It was chilly at first at 15 degrees, but at least it has warmed up from the 15-20 below zero of the last few days. My niece's boyfriend brought me an adorable 9 year old Yorkshire Terrier that had belonged to his mother who could no longer take care of her. Her name is Bella. She suddenly became my new doggie roommate on the night before New Year's Eve. She seems to love long walks and the comfort of my house and my bed. I took her on the hike this morning and she was just amazing for such a tiny little girl. She is a bundle of energy and as sweet as can be. I expect that we will go on many hiking, skiing and kayaking adventures for the next few years. I still miss my lost dog, Baby but Bella sure fills part of the empty spot her loss left behind. Suddenly it isn't nearly as lonely here as it had become. It was a gorgeous sunrise and had warmed up to 21 by the time we got done with the hike. We all went to breakfast at the Palmer Hotel restaurant and toasted in the new year with our tea, coffee and water mugs. I think 2024 has the potential of being a wonderful year. I sure hope it's a peaceful one.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZfoCNBcz3scCFP88jWnZdAoe97pxAVcjtI2IaCT3JazMQaOj8Gv4DuNaHlSzJ1AZzh3AZ1L28j7ijNPgxewFIwKcmrTLQcQgYXO044yaDgitqhrP1RhFXL07t6zfAwc0qNLYqVoCwZxIeLSSVq3Pjf8PW15t68syU0XIIi-BqiAwANHBFdAzZt9anWF6d/s2048/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZfoCNBcz3scCFP88jWnZdAoe97pxAVcjtI2IaCT3JazMQaOj8Gv4DuNaHlSzJ1AZzh3AZ1L28j7ijNPgxewFIwKcmrTLQcQgYXO044yaDgitqhrP1RhFXL07t6zfAwc0qNLYqVoCwZxIeLSSVq3Pjf8PW15t68syU0XIIi-BqiAwANHBFdAzZt9anWF6d/s320/1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2SbZzSYQaRQm9nyTs_nYHSQ2vesuM8blxZCVEaLJPjHtNuiiFq_fhfgJMHb2UwT3dG0mSOJRmAGuE7L8bWhpdajYQyoA_vg3hv3wFQOow4k0ECyIHIvOuYwlZEihnBVZiTVVxqmFK_IW-mKrMXHPVNggK_64-kTwHpCH8BNSsBhbMYw0E2Q2JtDpwA7VQ/s2048/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2SbZzSYQaRQm9nyTs_nYHSQ2vesuM8blxZCVEaLJPjHtNuiiFq_fhfgJMHb2UwT3dG0mSOJRmAGuE7L8bWhpdajYQyoA_vg3hv3wFQOow4k0ECyIHIvOuYwlZEihnBVZiTVVxqmFK_IW-mKrMXHPVNggK_64-kTwHpCH8BNSsBhbMYw0E2Q2JtDpwA7VQ/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCcULIU7TNuVDL-wjIC95nwN8hMxSbBVLfqStb7YMoQfYi-cJNw4jrXkXNnE9CDpZ_Dfl-E28583bW7LLaQ-EZfD0A2CJYFR5YDQq9fYh5qS_eBSy0G9-5n6XolCZXIRWtKjj6JdBpydCnPHnhvaUYnGcAsJzDGaUfnGLOBoyJXv1NNBb63ckGNoqPfkg6/s2048/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCcULIU7TNuVDL-wjIC95nwN8hMxSbBVLfqStb7YMoQfYi-cJNw4jrXkXNnE9CDpZ_Dfl-E28583bW7LLaQ-EZfD0A2CJYFR5YDQq9fYh5qS_eBSy0G9-5n6XolCZXIRWtKjj6JdBpydCnPHnhvaUYnGcAsJzDGaUfnGLOBoyJXv1NNBb63ckGNoqPfkg6/s320/3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMxC9iIvnLQwuw-Y5SNOGN_OK9IyL57uz648bLx6Z_9Br1vEw_Gel_mjbKCn_kRkKzEZ8w6jpJ3r-yk4qclCwDhcXUTW6V4vhPczRu4Y-ZNWxlZRavUio34rIP1-mVlLf4ctwR3eWIxgs8pOJVWxZ0JoWH6NQNwPPx3O0fXMb5UFaQs_QcE_lDLXrtDl2U/s960/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMxC9iIvnLQwuw-Y5SNOGN_OK9IyL57uz648bLx6Z_9Br1vEw_Gel_mjbKCn_kRkKzEZ8w6jpJ3r-yk4qclCwDhcXUTW6V4vhPczRu4Y-ZNWxlZRavUio34rIP1-mVlLf4ctwR3eWIxgs8pOJVWxZ0JoWH6NQNwPPx3O0fXMb5UFaQs_QcE_lDLXrtDl2U/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdG9Z9_GiNEyOIymUQfYibctM5q57tDOzv7Iqycw1xlXwe1fuTYYv6OaB3hrOACabLdvj8MZgvE6xBLVIXEQLKzjGOh6zI2CNCATSr3jiqeAcs7YT84x4InrWom772laubSZ10p_TGJB2yomjJw-xd36is1RSoZS7iumWc5WkAa5WByLE7opEiYVKBxL5c/s2048/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdG9Z9_GiNEyOIymUQfYibctM5q57tDOzv7Iqycw1xlXwe1fuTYYv6OaB3hrOACabLdvj8MZgvE6xBLVIXEQLKzjGOh6zI2CNCATSr3jiqeAcs7YT84x4InrWom772laubSZ10p_TGJB2yomjJw-xd36is1RSoZS7iumWc5WkAa5WByLE7opEiYVKBxL5c/s320/5.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bella</td></tr></tbody></table>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-42229815775111699002023-12-21T22:19:00.004-09:002023-12-21T22:19:13.399-09:00Winter Solstice Snowshoe up the Butte<p> Snowshoed with the Valley Wanderers through the fields and up Bodenburg Butte tonight by headlamp, Christmas lights and moonlight to celebrate the Winter Solstice. It was so beautiful and magical in the 5 degree temperature, with the clouds below us and a bright moon above. We all decorated ourselves with battery powered Christmas lights and followed a snowshoe path that Nan had broken in for us. There were a few obstacles, such as a couple of barbed wire fences to cross and a downed tree or two to climb over. Always a challenge wearing snowshoes. My fingers and toes were cold but the climb kept me warm for the 3 mile round trip. On the top we sang a few Christmas songs, in about 10 part disharmony. It was really fun. When we got back down we had hot drinks and cookies at Nan's house. </p><p>Now our days will slowly get longer. We Alaskans really look forward to heading toward longer days after this darkest time of the year. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ7d8zQQ8m5_WJUybFWQxQnK7eUFbxVNkIQgioGxemfe5EUV8mFzDzpxjee1ZtY88IzRCk1ub1ybvKGqPvCWmqMAH6o7YyWH1hpjVG_Ka7B-1l6X1nPPVuGAAUCB_XEJ6zAExRI9btTTVDbMy9Jm901QaAkq_8QeLwCgAAsVG_IzDP7HnB7mfSWZiEQ_07/s4032/IMG_6215.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ7d8zQQ8m5_WJUybFWQxQnK7eUFbxVNkIQgioGxemfe5EUV8mFzDzpxjee1ZtY88IzRCk1ub1ybvKGqPvCWmqMAH6o7YyWH1hpjVG_Ka7B-1l6X1nPPVuGAAUCB_XEJ6zAExRI9btTTVDbMy9Jm901QaAkq_8QeLwCgAAsVG_IzDP7HnB7mfSWZiEQ_07/s320/IMG_6215.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_vp1OtMyp3IL9pLBUqteoAPSm2I5y4hQrerTIa0tp0-uCicF3aKx8twvd5hLsRFyqgd3KWOZx4aG6RMF75XIy5xL_EGgMP9YSARU-tZhvzwqlms82hF9zzWDwVeuHIJSJe-1R3JwJL9zb9nfun7-rZ9n0pFq2d-_3xKpubwjUpRrnCEhGsEtZqWPHrEJA/s5712/IMG_6216.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4284" data-original-width="5712" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_vp1OtMyp3IL9pLBUqteoAPSm2I5y4hQrerTIa0tp0-uCicF3aKx8twvd5hLsRFyqgd3KWOZx4aG6RMF75XIy5xL_EGgMP9YSARU-tZhvzwqlms82hF9zzWDwVeuHIJSJe-1R3JwJL9zb9nfun7-rZ9n0pFq2d-_3xKpubwjUpRrnCEhGsEtZqWPHrEJA/s320/IMG_6216.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwuoltBW7DwnMW7Deocc_GzplyzAhz9SgWgpJqcz1c2_2XuhEXwGwgI-D0Rvn3fGPdAd43JPVr3gsILRkE9IiirA3MHkhMa9ZsHNZIuBbfrDb2EM1uC54g-y3XSK1LmqOoJhLNNjxhaNpRYr_cziqe6xuiuK5utyzYKyC2Q5pKp4uLnXLLUvRW7W9NOaGN/s4032/IMG_6219.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwuoltBW7DwnMW7Deocc_GzplyzAhz9SgWgpJqcz1c2_2XuhEXwGwgI-D0Rvn3fGPdAd43JPVr3gsILRkE9IiirA3MHkhMa9ZsHNZIuBbfrDb2EM1uC54g-y3XSK1LmqOoJhLNNjxhaNpRYr_cziqe6xuiuK5utyzYKyC2Q5pKp4uLnXLLUvRW7W9NOaGN/s320/IMG_6219.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWUap10cQ1oJak6okYKmQOx90JS8hCMUOMPJk_4gDKeML8_JFgdm41iKlpSLDfb6euYhXzHtwNLRzgKeg0Z716iowUHXmazATN27J3r0NkAZQsoRx3opha3f5o3NilfZt-eDqd00whzz97uNfmWK1Xb8EI8NnEeq8WMlTiBdUVBvUMw0PmVK_cCSo4dT0z/s4032/IMG_6220.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWUap10cQ1oJak6okYKmQOx90JS8hCMUOMPJk_4gDKeML8_JFgdm41iKlpSLDfb6euYhXzHtwNLRzgKeg0Z716iowUHXmazATN27J3r0NkAZQsoRx3opha3f5o3NilfZt-eDqd00whzz97uNfmWK1Xb8EI8NnEeq8WMlTiBdUVBvUMw0PmVK_cCSo4dT0z/s320/IMG_6220.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8XSKPJS4ei6MvDAsVCcEtV1b1fJp_2_O35b3gs1VTHvYuzpzFlOKpWek_Y0aqxvhXRdu6kVLskjQaalqd9tZjRODSicATSRdmoSi6DUNryUy9FwlUzkdlwx2Smzhj7TA1nJowCnPUgLO13XX5dhWpSFbYDK_iGILXYCCfY-joIcZFsf6_Dw4W_SkyHGmP/s4032/IMG_6221.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8XSKPJS4ei6MvDAsVCcEtV1b1fJp_2_O35b3gs1VTHvYuzpzFlOKpWek_Y0aqxvhXRdu6kVLskjQaalqd9tZjRODSicATSRdmoSi6DUNryUy9FwlUzkdlwx2Smzhj7TA1nJowCnPUgLO13XX5dhWpSFbYDK_iGILXYCCfY-joIcZFsf6_Dw4W_SkyHGmP/s320/IMG_6221.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dyrS7A2uKkPPMirMOAWFRD9RHbFmFCmAEMai0vN-rD0-9Sz6zwVP1POw7jdTd5Fh-5THLfOPw199cftB5l5AQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div><p></p>Carenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10031624435532892546noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2286703781471381236.post-16077944591556823412023-12-14T17:55:00.042-09:002023-12-16T18:08:45.737-09:00Koko Head Hike<p> I'm leaving Hawaii tonight and heading home to Alaska. I took one last drive to the Byodo-In Temple to offer a prayer for a safe flight.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidelMo_kFy3HLJMdY2ZCL4nlkE-lFGwzy_u91h6_GG_Q9gI3hGxq9AypkO2xwoqSNRzde2QBqP1hEjlwdpytE_HSxYYtFxYYGcubXxv0axyoQFB5e5ZVBbJuHnpGcqi5_ZY95lADuRdE2Aq8zpRNOsvMhVt9wbaJ0hvs5jvso8Usix0fFWCP8guKOgEGCS/s2048/b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidelMo_kFy3HLJMdY2ZCL4nlkE-lFGwzy_u91h6_GG_Q9gI3hGxq9AypkO2xwoqSNRzde2QBqP1hEjlwdpytE_HSxYYtFxYYGcubXxv0axyoQFB5e5ZVBbJuHnpGcqi5_ZY95lADuRdE2Aq8zpRNOsvMhVt9wbaJ0hvs5jvso8Usix0fFWCP8guKOgEGCS/s320/b.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p>From there I drove to the Koko Head Trailhead and climbed up the long old cable car rail tracks to the Koko Head summit. It's a very strange little 2 mile round trip hike. It's more like a long staircase than an actual hiking trail. You step from plank to plank along the old railbed. Closer to the top it almost feels more like a ladder than a stairway. But what spectacular views you get from the top. I had wrapped my fleece sweater around my waist just in case I got cold. It was kind of cool and rainy when I started up, but very soon it was clear and hot again. On the top I was glad I brought that sweater because the wind was extreme up there. I only stayed long enough to snap some photos of the amazing view, then carefully descended once again down the long stairway. Such and interesting climb. I'm so glad I decided to end my trip this way. Now, off to the airport.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2WV958iiJgNz62eeOR9kxvR9rG9x8AakI1AfYmrgfXVru55PTzLr7PfwuS2DqPYN7_-AX6CmVlipShodHqu2-XLNpfaFeHSg6NNWpUmVC9IRg0-FrKAJVFqNJJHec6hZciG_Mmbz2Cinv4_XPcI7JLAnf0MFgwnJeGzHiVWzUX3IFoNXjkXrRCyhUaqsc/s2048/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em;
